Rekai Centres has advanced plans for their proposed long-term care (LTC) facility in Toronto’s emerging West Don Lands with a recent Site Plan Approval application submitted to the City. We last checked in on the planning of the facility known as Cherry Place in the Fall of 2020, following the project’s presentation to Waterfront Toronto’s Design Review Panel that September. The latest application seeks to finalize plans for the 13-storey, Montgomery Sisam Architects-designed building at the corner of Front and Cherry streets, which would help form a western gateway to the neighbourhood.

The building is proposed to rise 56.7 metres high along the west side of Cherry Street, between Eastern Avenue to the north and Front Street East to the south. The building would contain a total gross floor area (GFA) of 23,773 m², with a total of 348 long-term care beds along with supporting functions including a seniors assessment centre, a dialysis clinic, and a personal support worker college program. Helping to animate the Cherry and Front intersection, a cafe is proposed with street frontage on the LTC’s ground floor.

Architectural plans now offer a more detailed look at the materials planned for the building’s exterior. Overall, a frame of precast concrete would surround gridded sections of brick veneer panels, glazing, and spandrel glass, while accent materials include curtainwall glazing at ground level, terracotta hollow clay tile, stone, aluminum, and architectural louvres.

Renderings of life inside Cherry Place depict LTC bedrooms as well as common spaces such as an atrium (pictured below), and the level 8 amenity lounge and town hall spaces. With residents of LTC facilities unlikely to be driving, just five vehicle parking spaces are proposed for the building, which would be accessed via a shared easement laneway proposed along the west boundary of the property. A pick-up and drop-off area along the proposed easement laneway includes covered seating surrounding the main LTC entrance. The 514 Cherry Streetcar running just outside the building would accommodate most building staff and visitors, while 52 bicycle parking spaces are also proposed to accommodate cyclists.
